A Hanoverian Waterloo Medal named to “Soldat Heinrich Mentz, Landwehr Bat. Muenden”. I have a special interest in the Münden Landwehr as my great, great, great, great grandfather, Johann Lorenz Riepenhausen, also served in this unit at Waterloo. It’s quite possible that Mentz knew Riepenenhausen.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to locate any specific information about Soldat Mentz and his military service. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help with research on Mentz.
The Münden Landwehr, under the command of Major Ferdinand von Schmid, formed part of the 4th Hanoverian Brigade in the 6th Division of Lt. Gen. Sir Lowry Cole. The battalion lost 33 men killed, wounded or missing at Quatre Bras on June 16th and 165 men at Waterloo two days later. (Out of a total of 627 men in the battalion.)
