A very nice rim engraved 1915 Haitian and Dominican Campaign Medal pair to Chief Yeoman William McCluggage. He earned both medals through service on the USS Tennessee (later renamed USS Memphis). He was still serving on this ship when it was wrecked by a tsunami in Santo Domingo harbor in August, 1916. Over 200 members of the crew were badly injured and 43 killed in this disaster although McCluggage apparently made it through unscathed, despite loosing all of his personal possessions.
This pair was purchased from FJP Auctions in 2007. With the medals are 50 pages that were scanned from McCluggage's service file in St. Louis. These documents will be provided on cd-rom. In addition to these two campaign medals McCluggage was also awarded a Navy Good Conduct Medal, WWI Victory Medal with Atlantic Fleet bar and Naval Reserve Medal. (Current location of these medals is unknown.)
