New Zealand Wars Medal named (officially engraved) to Pte. William Cabe, 70th Foot. Pte. Cabe was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1829. He enlisted in the 70th Foot at 17 years of age in 1847 and served with the regiment continuously until 1868. He was also issued an Indian Mutiny Medal; current location unknown.
Engraved medals were normally issued to men who took their discharge in New Zealand. However Pte. Cabe took his at Kinsale Barracks in Ireland and there is no evidence that he ever returned to New Zealand. It's unclear why he was issued an engraved medal rather than one that was impressed. The diameter of the medal is exactly right at all points, so it has not been erased and renamed. The unit on engraved medals normally appears as "70th Foot" vs. on impressed medals where it's "70th Regt".
